Sr. Manager, Development Accounting

The Sr. Manager of Development Accounting reports directly to the Controller Commercial Accounting. The position is responsible for basic accounting and reporting functions for our Woodlands and Bridgeland Development Projects in the Houston market. This includes but is not limited to; supervising month-end close, preparing and reviewing journal entries, account reconciliations, roll forwards, and assisting with financial statement preparation, assisting with audit requests and maintaining effective internal controls in compliance with Sarbanes Oxley Act.
The Manager of Development Accounting is responsible for preparing and reviewing monthly financial statements and communicating results to the Development Controller and Development Management Team. The Manager ensures that development cost ledgers are complete and accurate and are in accordance with GAAP and internal accounting policies and procedures. This position helps ensures that development activities are accurate and project reports are prepared monthly.
Additionally, the position ensures that project costs do not exceed authorized development budgets, development contracts and commitments. The position will help administer the contract administration process (involves input of development commitments, contracts and change orders into JD Edwards and/or e-Builder along with the verification of invoice coding and approvals) as it relates to this project. The Manager will work closely with the Development Team in establishing annual and project budgets as well as updating cash forecasts. The position must have proven ability to communicate directly with Segment Controller, Corporate Accounting, external auditors, senior management, etc.
ESSENTIAL JOB RESPONSIBILITIES:
Supervising month-end close, including preparing and reviewing journal entries, account reconciliations, roll forwards, and financial statements.
Ensures capitalized costs are recorded in compliance with Company’s Capitalization policy.
Analyze project costs and schedules to place assets in service timely.
Monitor and communicate project budgets and actual costs.
Ensures development budgets, contract payments and commitments are not exceeded.
Assist in preparing annual budgets and periodic forecasts.
Assist in preparation and review monthly job costs reports.
Reconciliation of job costs ledgers to general ledger and monthly Job Cost Report.
KNOWLEDGE, EXPERIENCE AND SKILLS:
- Minimum of 8-10 years of accounting experience required. Big 4 accounting experience is preferred.
- Real estate industry and real estate development or project cost accounting experience.
- Extensive knowledge of Microsoft Excel, Word, Access and related products.
Proven ability to effectively communicate directly with Division Controller, Corporate Accounting, external auditors, senior management, etc.
- Must be deadline focused, organized and exhibit problem-solving skills.
Excellent verbal and written communication skills including strong technical writing skills.
Strong analytical and organizational skills.
Handle a dynamic work environment with competing priorities.
Proven supervisory experience.

- Knowledge of Hyperion or other financial reporting software
